Cardiopulmonary resuscitation can mean the difference between life and death for someone whose heart has stopped beating unexpectedly.

Without prompt CPR, death from cardiac arrest can occur in minutes.

Yet only about half of Americans — 54 percent, according to a nationally representative survey by the Cleveland Clinic — say they know how to do CPR. Even fewer — 17 percent, or 1 of every 6 people — know that simply using chest compressions, with no special CPR training or mouth-to-mouth breathing, can make a difference when someone goes into cardiac arrest.

Those compressions can double or triple a victim’s chances of surviving, according to the American Heart Association.

The right pace for compressions is 100 to 200 beats a minute.

CPR promoters recommend using the beat of the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive” while giving CPR.

It provides the perfect pace for compressions — and may, in fact, help someone stay alive.
